Interventional Procedures

INTERVENTIONAL

These procedures are used to alleviate conditions that have already been found to exist.  These are minimally invasive and often offer an alternative to surgery.  These can include:

UTERINE FIBOID EMBOLIZATION

Uterine Fibroid Embolization:    Nonsurgical Treatment for Symptomatic Fibroid         By Jie Mao, M.D.

Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are benign smooth muscle tumors that arise from the uterine wall (Figure 1 and 2). They are the most common tumor of the female genital tract and affect 20-40% of all women of childbearing age.  Approximately 60-90% of all uterine fibroids are asymptomatic (1). Symptoms tend to develop in women between 30-40 years of age, and often increase in the perimenopausal period.  Clinical manifestations include dysfunctional uterine bleeding, pelvic pain, pelvic pressure, abdominal distention, urinary frequency, constipation, and infertility.

ENDOVENOUS ABLATION OF THE VARICOSE VEINS

Endovenous ablation of varicose veins is done to aid in eliminating varicose veins which can cause debilitating leg symptoms such as severe pain and skin ulcerations.  The ablation procedure uses a laser source to seal the afflicted vein.

Vein ablation is done for patients who suffer from varicose veins with a treatment that is less invasive than surgery.

Preparation:  This will require a pre-ultrasound examination of the legs and consultation which can be done at the Medical Imaging Center.
